Airstream Classic FAQ

What are the dimensions of an Airstream Classic?

The Airstream Classic is available in three different floor plans: the 28RB, 30RB, and 33FB. Each model offers different size options:

Classic 28RB:

  • Exterior Length: 28 feet 10 inches
  • Exterior Width: 8 feet 5.5 inches
  • Exterior Height (with A/C): 9 feet 7 inches
  • Interior Width: 8 feet 1 inch
  • Interior Height (with A/C): 6 feet 7 inches

Classic 30RB:

  • Exterior Length: 31 feet 5 inches
  • Exterior Width: 8 feet 5.5 inches
  • Exterior Height (with A/C): 9 feet 7 inches
  • Interior Width: 8 feet 1 inch
  • Interior Height (with A/C): 6 feet 7 inches

Classic 33FB:

  • Exterior Length: 33 feet 3 inches
  • Exterior Width: 8 feet 5.5 inches
  • Exterior Height (with A/C): 9 feet 7 inches
  • Interior Width: 8 feet 1 inch
  • Interior Height (with A/C): 6 feet 7 inches

The 28RB and 30RB models give you the option of either a queen bed or twin bed arrangement. The 33FB features a front bedroom design with a residential-style bathroom that spans the full width of the rear. Choosing the twin bed configuration opens up the middle aisle, creating more space to walk through and an unobstructed sightline from end to end. Twin beds are five inches longer than the queen, making them ideal for taller campers.

How many people does an Airstream Classic sleep?

The Airstream Classic sleeps up to five people comfortably. All three floor plans feature:

  • A powered queen or twin bed configuration in the bedroom
  • A powered dinette that converts to sleeping space
  • A powered lounge sofa with two recliners

The powered bedroom lets you adjust your position for reading, watching TV, or sleeping with convenient controls located beside the bed. The dinette changes from a dining area to a bed at the push of a button, providing a comfortable spot for additional guests. The lounge sofa includes two powered recliners that also work as an extra sleeping area when you need it.

What kind of vehicle do I need to tow an Airstream Classic?

To safely tow an Airstream Classic, your vehicle needs sufficient towing capacity for the model you choose. Here are the important weight numbers:

Classic 28RB:

  • Unit Base Weight: 7,650 pounds (with LP and batteries)
  • Hitch Weight: 875 pounds
  • GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): 8,800 pounds

Classic 30RB:

  • Unit Base Weight: 7,725 pounds (with LP and batteries)
  • Hitch Weight: 830 pounds
  • GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): 10,000 pounds

Classic 33FB:

  • Unit Base Weight: 8,425 pounds (with LP and batteries)
  • Hitch Weight: 1,150 pounds
  • GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating): 10,000 pounds

Your tow vehicle should have a towing capacity that exceeds the GVWR of your chosen model. For the 28RB, you'll need a vehicle rated for at least 9,000 pounds. For the 30RB and 33FB, look for a minimum towing capacity of 10,500 pounds. Most full-size trucks and heavy-duty SUVs handle these weights easily.

You'll also need a weight distribution hitch system for safe towing. Always check your vehicle's owner's manual for its specific towing capacity. The team at Airstream of Des Moines can help you determine if your vehicle is the right fit for the Classic.

Does owning an Airstream Classic make sense living in Iowa?

Absolutely! Iowa is a wonderful state for Airstream ownership, and the Classic is well-suited for experiencing everything the Hawkeye State has to offer.

Four-Season Camping: Iowa experiences true four-season weather, with each season offering different camping opportunities. Spring brings warming temperatures from the 50s to 70s, perfect for watching nature come to life. Summer offers hot weather in the 80s to 90s, ideal for water activities at Iowa's lakes and rivers. Fall is considered the best season for camping, with comfortable temperatures in the 70s, beautiful changing leaves, and lower humidity from September through October. Winter camping is possible at year-round campgrounds, with activities like ice fishing and snowshoeing, though most campgrounds close during the coldest months.

Outdoor Activities: Iowa offers incredible variety for RV travelers. From Des Moines, you have easy access to numerous state parks and recreation areas. Popular nearby destinations include Ledges State Park, Saylorville Lake, Big Creek State Park, and Lake Red Rock. The state features over 70 state parks and recreation areas, offering hiking, biking, fishing, boating, and water sports. The Classic's length works well for Iowa's campgrounds and state park facilities.

Equipment Features: The Classic comes equipped with 300W solar panels and lithium batteries, perfect for off-grid camping at Iowa's state parks and recreation areas. The dual air conditioning system keeps you comfortable during hot, humid Iowa summers. The ducted furnace is important for spring and fall camping when temperatures can drop, and the enclosed, insulated, heated underbelly protects your systems during cold weather. These features make the Classic suitable for camping from spring through fall, and even winter at year-round facilities.

Local Convenience: With Airstream of Des Moines located in Altoona, just off Interstate 80, you have easy access to service and support whenever you need it. This makes routine maintenance, repairs, and upgrades simple throughout ownership. Our team understands Iowa camping conditions and can help you prepare for different seasons.

Storage Considerations: Iowa winters can be harsh, so proper winterization is important if you're not using your trailer during the cold months. Many Airstreamers use indoor storage facilities or covered storage during winter, or they fully winterize their trailers for outdoor storage. Spring and fall are excellent times to have your trailer serviced to prepare for or wrap up the camping season.

The Classic's quality construction, featuring its riveted aluminum shell and superior insulation, makes it well-suited for Iowa's four-season climate. From summer lake weekends to fall color tours and spring nature explorations, this Airstream is built for Iowa adventures.
